It was’t that Daphne couldn’t appreciate Dr. Crane’s voice. He was smooth and interesting and evocative. It was the sort of voice that suited the radio perfectly. It was the sort of voice that suited audiobooks perfectly.
But not this one. Not this book. This was her favourite book. It was romantic and passionate so subtly perfect and now she had to listen to boss read it to her.
Because there was no chance, none at all, that she could get away with not listening to it. He’d given her the damn thing after all.
“Oh, Daphne,” he’d said. “I noticed you’re always reading this book, so I thought you’d enjoy this.”
And knowing Dr Crane as she did, she knew she had about forty-eight hours to listen to the whole thing before he started quizzing her on it, which was why she was huddled on one end of the sofa, clutching a cushion and trying to power through.
She’d been listening for ten minutes when there was a knock at the door.
“Oh, thank God,” she said, jumping up and running to open the door.
“Hello, Daphne,” Dr. Crane - the other Dr. Crane - greeted her as he stepped inside. “I was looking for Frasier... Are you alright? You look frazzled.”
“Your brother is having a late lunch with,” she waved her hand vaguely, raising her voice to drown out the sound of the tape, “someone. Would you like a drink?”
“I can get it,” he said and guided her to the sofa. “Is that Frasier?” he asked, looking around. “I knew he’s recorded an audiobook. Are you enjoying it?”
Daphne hesitated as Niles watched her, waiting patiently, or possibly eagerly, for her answer. Then, before she could say a word, he whirled around and up off the couch, striding over to turn off the tape.
“I’m sorry,” he said as he joined her again. “But there are certain things I don’t need to hear my brother say.” He smiled and patted her hand. “I’ll get us both a drink.”
“Thank you, Dr..Crane,” she said, feeling equal parts relieved and embarrassed. “I wouldn’t normally care, but this is my..”
“It’s your favourite book,” he said, walking back from the kitchen with two glasses of orange juice. “I understand. I know I’d be devastated if I had to listen to him reading Les Chansons de Bilitis.”
Daphne blinked at him, growing even more confused when he blushed and looked away.
“You don’t have to listen to it, you know? He’ll understand.”
“No he won’t,” Daphne scoffed. “I’m sorry Dr. Crane, but your brother isn’t always the most understanding of men and he gave me this as a gift because he thought I’d like it. It’d be rude to tell him I don’t want to hear him reading out my book.” She squeezed his hand and shook her head. “I can do it. It’s only a few hours of my life and then I can forget I ever heard it.”
He squeezed her hand in return and smiled. “I can sit with you while you finish, if you like.”
