1.
Jon had warned Spencer beforehand that Dylan could be "tricky".

"It's just strangers. She didn't let Cassie pet her for three months. It took weeks before she was totally comfortable with me. You just have to be careful."

Spencer took this to mean, "look, don't touch" and was, frankly, happy to do as Jon said. "Cats," he told Jon, "don't like me anyway."

Jon let them into his apartment and Spencer looked around curiously, taking in everything. Piles of amateur photographer magazines were stacked in the hall. A couple of guitars were leaned up against the wall of the living room. Dylan's scratching post and a few toys were scattered across the floor.

"Sorry," Jon said, looking around. "I, uh, didn't get a chance to clean up."

Spencer laughed and shook his head, assuring Jon it didn't matter. It felt like a home.

A small black head poked out from behind the sofa and Spencer watched as Dylan strode towards them. She curled around Jon's legs and meowed. Jon scooped her up in his arms and kissed the top of her head. "I'm sorry, did we wake you up?" Another meow. Jon tipped Dylan back down to the floor. "Food time then huh?" He grinned at Spencer. "Do you want a drink? I have soft drinks if you..."

Spencer smiled and shrugged, pushing his hands into his pockets. "I'll have a beer, sure."

Jon promised he'd be right back, Dylan following sedately, leaving Spencer to take a seat on the sofa to wait. He was reaching out to pick up a magazine from the coffee table when Dylan returned. The cat stared at Spencer as she approached and Spencer wasn't sure exactly what to do. He remembered the no touching rule just fine though, so he simply smiled at Dylan.

"You're smiling at a cat." Spencer rolled his eyes at himself. Dylan jumped up on the coffee table and stopped. She tilted her head to the side and watched Spencer. "Um, hi?" Spencer addressed her. "I'm Spencer."

Dylan took a step and then another, and then jumped from the coffee table straight onto Spencer's lap.

"Whoa, kitty," Spencer said, startled. His hands moved instinctively to hold Dylan, who meowed loudly and pushed her face up into Spencer's wrist. Spencer scratched Dylan behind the ears and laughed softly when Dylan began to purr. "Huh. Well what do you know?"

"How did you manage that?" Jon asked and Spencer looked up to see him stood, framed in the doorway, holding two bottles of beer.

"I don't know," Spencer laughed. "I guess she just likes me."

2.
Brendon was loud and there was only so much loud Dylan could take. Clover loved Brendon. She would run around his legs and over his legs. She would bat at the string he would wiggle for her until she was jumping as high as she could and Brendon was trying to get her to do backflips like she had the first time they'd done this.

Ryan was a little too sedate for Clover, but Dylan liked to curl up in his lap while he read. She'd fall asleep and he'd stroke her back in long rhythmic strokes, scratching her head lightly on every third or fourth pass. After fifteen minutes of that she'd start to purr, which would in turn make Ryan smile.

Of course they both loved Jon. Jon fed them. Jon took care of them. He played with them when they needed it and petted them when they wanted it.

But on the nights they were all together, three large pizza boxes spread across the floor between them - with Ryan lying on his back on the sofa, his hand stroking absently through Brendon's hair as he dozed, while Brendon flicked through all the music channels on the tv trying to find something, anything, that didn't feature Dave Grohl - the cats naturally gravitated towards Spencer, who would lie still on his back with a cushion pushed under his head. Clover would dance across his chest until Dylan pushed her out of the way and settled down to sleep. Clover would push her nose into Spencer's neck and collapse on his arm.

3.
When Jon cooked on his own, he would save some scraps from Dylan and Clover. They knew better than to jump up to the corner of the counter where he'd keep them, but they'd stay in the kitchen, making sure he knew they were there.

When Spencer cooked with Jon he'd slip them things there and then, whenever Jon wasn't looking. They'd ignore Jon and stay close to Spencer, weaving around his legs and nuzzling close as he sneaked them the good bits of fish.

"I know what you're doing you know?" Jon said one night, when Spencer dropped a couple of shrimp under their noses.

"I'm not doing anything," Spencer protested to Jon's back.

"You're bribing them to love you."

Spencer laughed as Dylan pressed her nose against his leg and started to purr.

"I don't need to bribe them."

4.
The cats were nowhere to be found when Spencer came back from his Starbucks run. He poked his head into Jon's bedroom, but Jon was still buried under the covers and piles of tissues. Bottles of cough syrup and cold medicines littered the top of the bedside cabinet. Spencer placed a cup of coffee within reach in case Jon woke up and changed the glass of water for some fresh.

He retreated to the sofa and curled up with his coffee and a book until the rain started and both cats jumped back through the window into the apartment. They raced for Jon's room and Spencer scrambled to his feet, chasing after them.

Dylan and Clover were trying their hardest to get under the covers with Jon, who was groaning and holding the comforter around himself as though his life depended on it.

Spencer scooped both cats up, ignoring their protests and took them back to the living room, where he cuddled them up with him under the throw and stroked them until they were warm and calm again.

And one time they didn't

Usually the cats had free reign of the house. The doors were always open so they could wander from room to room as they pleased. Jon never closed the doors on them. They would sleep with him every night, curled up somewhere on the bed, as close or far away as they needed to be, even when he and Cassie were together.

Spencer and Jon were laughing as they stumbled towards the bedroom. Dylan barely roused herself from her spot. Clover yawned and stretched and then padded softly down the hall towards Jon's bedroom.

"Jon," Spencer moaned from somewhere near the middle of the bed. "She's watching."

Jon laughed. "She's not watching. She just wants to go to bed."

Spencer rolled away. "I'm not having sex in front of your cats." He slid to his feet and shooed Clover from the room. Then he closed the bedroom door.

Clover sat outside, staring at it until Dylan joined her.

They both ignored Spencer for a week.

Awww, this is adorable. Spencer and kitties is a really great image! ♥ And Spencer, you're TOTALLY bribing them, don't try and lie.

Awww, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Spencer is definitely bribing them. All cats need a little bribing after all. :D

Ok, aside from the Jon/Spencer, it's a FIC WITH CATS which YAAAAY!

I LOVED brendon trying to escape the Grohl, and making Clover go over backwards, like with Ruebin!

Bascally, I love this so much!

Yes I stole mercilessly from "things I have done with cats". Stuff that doesn't involve sneezing anyway. And of course, escaping Dave Grohl, which I even complain about to my mother now.

I'm glad you loved it. :D Yay!

No human or animal could resist Spencer I'm sure. ;)

I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for letting my know about Dylan. I'll change it when I get a chance. I started writing it that way and then I thought "Gah I don't actually know!!"

Aww so adorable. This made me really miss the cats I had when I was little.

Bribing cats to love you is totally one of the most important parts of cat ownership!

[identity profile] jacqui-hw.livejournal.com 2009-05-07 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehehe. I'm pleased you liked it hon. I don't know a lot about cats being horribly allergic to them, so I'm glad I got a few things right. ;)

[identity profile] witheveryspark.livejournal.com 2009-05-07 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, this was adorable and made me smile. I've desperately needed some Jon/Spencer lately, so I was making little squeaky noises at Jon and Spencer cooking together, and Jon being sick, and Jon and Spencer being such BOYFRIENDS.

[identity profile] jacqui-hw.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, thank you. There is not enough Jon/Spencer around these days, no. I'm really glad you liked it.
