Day 13 → A fictional book
Have His Carcase by Dorothy L Sayers.
I never used to read crime novels or detective fiction. Truthfully, because the book covers they used in the 60s/70s scared the crap out of me when my mum would read them. But I remember her telling me about one scene in Have His Carcase that made me go and read every book in the series.
Lord Peter and Harriet Vane are investigating a suspected murder.
"...I’ll have to get a decent frock if there is such a thing in Wilvercombe."
"Well, get a wine-coloured one, then. I’ve always wanted to see you in wine-colour. It suits people with honey-coloured skin. What an ugly word ‘skin’ is. ‘Blossoms of the honey-sweet and honey-coloured menuphar’—I always have a quotation for everything—it saves original thinking."
Peter loves Harriet, but she refuses to marry him. Harriet's feelings are always safely locked away until this scene. Once he has told her to buy the wine-coloured frock, he leaves, but seconds later she runs after him to ask:
"Port or sherry?" she demanded.
"What?" said Wimsey, taken aback.
"The frock--port or sherry?"
"Claret," said Wimsey. "Chateau Margaux 1893 or thereabouts. I'm not particular within a year or two."
I suppose I fell in love with it for the same reason my mum did. I tend to think of myself as more of a romantic than she is, but this book to me is terribly romantic, even with all the death and intrigue, pages of deciphering secret messages and Peter and Harriet screaming at each other. DLS is a wonderful writer. She's very clever and she never patronizes her readers. Huge sections of French you don't understand? Well go and look it up. Her characters are beautifully formed. Her stories are everything you want from a detective novel, with romance and humour thrown in for free. Have His Carcase is not the first book in the series, (Whose Body?) and it's not the book that introduces Harriet Vane (Strong Poison), but it is my favourite.
