Title: Doctor Who (or How Sam Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Time Travel)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jacqui_hw
Rating: PG (this part)
Summary: The Doctor is even more confused than usual.

Sam Tyler was the not The Master.

Probably.

He looked like The Master and sometimes he talked like The Master, but he wasn't.

The Doctor couldn't decide whether he was happy about that or not.

Sam Tyler was however rather good company - once you managed to convince him that he was neither hallucinating, nor mad.

"This is just... weird."

The Doctor smiled. "Very."

"And this is 1973? I'm not in a coma?"

"Well I landed in 1973. So far as I know, there's no way to travel into someone's subconscious."

Sam laughed. "I'm not crazy."

"No more than your average human."

It was rather strange, The Doctor thought as he poured them both another cup of tea, to be sitting having a civilised conversation with someone who was practically identical to his-

His thoughts came to an abrupt halt and he froze, staring off into space.

He didn't realise he was spilling the tea until Sam took the pot away from him.

***

The Doctor was not a figment of his imagination.

Probably.

Not any more so than anything else he had encountered in 1973 anyway.

Sam's desperate need to check his mental health had involved him bolting from the TARDIS when The Doctor burst into a fit of girlish giggles, and running around the police box a few times.

The Doctor had lounged in the doorway, hands deep in his pockets, a smile playing on his lips.

He had looked happy.

Now however he was frowning off into the distance and Sam didn't know what to do, besides rescue the tea.

"Doctor?" he asked hesitantly. "Are you alright?"

***

The Doctor nodded absently and blinked, dragging himself back to the present.

"Yes. Yes, yes," he added quickly. "I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be fine?" The last came out clipped and The Doctor winced inwardly.

Sam just rolled his eyes.

"Excellent. You're paranoid and I'm a schizophrenic. What a team."

"Team!" The Doctor exclaimed as he jumped up from his chair, sending the table (and the tea) crashing to the floor. "Brilliant. Of course, you'll want a trip won't you? Everyone wants a trip."

***

Sam was far too used to Gene's behaviour to take offence to The Doctor's. If he'd been human, Sam would have said he had ADD. He wasn't human however, so Sam put it down to "cultural differences".

Realising he'd had enough cultural clashes in the past six months to last him a lifetime, Sam scowled at The Doctor's offer.

"No thank you." And then, when he remembered where he was, "Unless you can take me home."

***

'Home' was 2006. 'Home' was not a time The Doctor particularly wanted to visit. But Manchester was about 180 miles away from temptation and therefore, he supposed, safe enough.

He would just pop Sam back in his proper time and that would be that. It was the gentlemanly thing to do.

***

Sam clung to the console to stop himself flying across the room. It was never this bumpy on TV. Tom Baker hadn't been thrown around in an unseemly fashion as he and Romana travelled through time and space.

"Oh, that reminds me!" he shouted above the noise and The Doctor grinned across at him.

"Reminds you of what?" The Doctor kicked the panel he'd been working behind closed and kicked it again for good measure.

"You called me... Master."

The Doctor froze again and the smile fell from his face. Sam ploughed on regardless.

"I don't... Do I remind you of him? The Master? From what I remember he was very..." He waved vaguely at his chin and clothes.

The Doctor nodded and after a long moment, said quietly, "He regenerated."

"And he looks like me?"

"Exactly like you."

***

As soon as the words left his mouth, The Doctor felt a chill run down his spine.

"I can't take you back," he said, reaching to reverse the controls.

Sam's hands covered his and pulled him away. "What do you mean you can't? You have to. I don't belong in 1973. I want to go home."

"I'm sorry Sam." The Doctor shook his head and stepped away, realising he didn't sound very sorry at all. "You can't just turn up looking exactly like the man who's about to be elected Prime Minister. Especially when he's going to do such terrible things."

"Just turn up?" Sam shouted. "I was there first. Take me home."

"No. You might be in danger."

"Doctor..."

"I said, no."

"What am I supposed to do then? Go gallivanting around the Universe with you?"

The Doctor shrugged. "There are worse things."

You just made me squee at my computer. XD I loved the following lines:

"Excellent. You're paranoid and I'm a schizophrenic. What a team." - Yay! Really, I think it would be fun. ;)

"Brilliant. Of course, you'll want a trip won't you? Everyone wants a trip." - I got the distant feeling that the Doctor wants to sell something here. "A trip in the Tardis? No problem, we got special offers for Master-look-a-likes!"

Realising he'd had enough cultural clashes in the past six months to last him a lifetime, Sam scowled at The Doctor's offer. - Cute... XD

"You called me... Master." - *dragging mind away from pervers thoughts*

From what I remember he was very..." He waved vaguely at his chin and clothes. - Sam's waving is just great. I'm sure he's picturing himself with the beard and the Time Lord robe now... XD

"You can't just turn up looking exactly like the man who's about to be elected Prime Minister." - Mmh... But... Didn't the Master turn up in 2007/2008? *vaguely remembering something* Oh, well, still a bad idea. The year will finally come.

"I was there first. Take me home." - And again: Cute! X3

These two travelling together will surely be fun. Can't wait for the next chapter! And I hope Gene Genie is going to turn up at one point? I would love to see how he reacts to the Doctor! Of course I would also like to see Chris, Anni or Ray (since when do I like Ray? o.o").

You. are. wonderful. ^__^

Hehehehe. Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it.

Sam is wondering what he would look like with a goatee and Snape-like robes. The Doctor would imagine that too but then he'd have to have some "alone time". ;)

I get confused by the New Who timelines. I was just thinking that he was around during the Christmas Invasion and I watched that Christmas 2005 so, if it's wrong it's wrong. =P

We'll see whether anyone else shows up. I don't really have a reason for it right now.

And thank you again. *bg*
